The Blacklist Challenge #9
Christmas is over, the Bailey’s is gone, and so too is my procrastinating of this challenge.
What would I change about The Blacklist? I think it’s got to be the character development of the ladies on the show thus far, particularly our heroine Liz. So far, she’s like any other cop drama heroine I’ve ever seen, save for her mysterious traumatic backstory, although the concept of a mysterious traumatic backstory is sort of cliche itself. Everything about her personality, that she’s a tough bitch whose coworkers snicker behind her back, a fact that makes her self-conscious, is told to us. Literally. In the pilot. By Liz. Otherwise we know she’s a strong lady physically and emotionally, because of all the shit the plot throws at her. But I can’t tell you what makes Liz so special and different from Meera. Mr. Kaplan doesn’t show up until the tenth episode and she has more personality in her one scene than Liz does throughout the season.
And even though it is my least favorite scene of the whole show, Liz’s opening scene in the pilot is the most personality we’ve seen her have. If I personally had to write about Liz’s personality from that scene alone, I’d say she was goofy and quirky and it’s ironic that she’s an FBI agent because I wouldn’t give that woman access to any sort of weaponry or government secrets. I kind of wish that’s what they had done with her actually. All her other scenes where she exhibits a personality, they all seem like they could be different characters. There is no consistency to her personality other than she is fairly good in a fight. Seeing her stick a pen in Red’s neck after seeing her gross meet-cute with the audience at the beginning of the episode, I couldn’t believe it was the same person. Maybe you could say that means Liz is a complicated character, but I think it’s more like they can’t decided what kind of person they want Liz to be. And I kind of want her to be a goofball with a scary pen-stabby streak.
(Ditto for Meera Malik, she’s really the kind of person I see people calling ‘sir’ behind her back. She’s supposedly a mother, is horny for DRez, and she has some scary interrogation skills, but she is incredibly monotone and boring for someone allegedly so interesting.)
